Residents of KaMatsamo (formerly Schoemansdal) and the Nkomazi Local Municipality in Mpumalanga saw earthworks commence for the expansion of Matsamo Plaza on in August 2021, after an 18-month delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Property developers Moolman Group purchased Matsamo Plaza from Redefine Properties in 2019, a 7 499m2 shopping centre currently anchored by Boxer, with plans to expand and cater to growing demand from local Mpumalanga shoppers and retailers.

The area is home to more than 92 000 households and Matsamo Mall is strategically placed to draw in shoppers from nearby Swaziland and Mozambique. It is located a mere 23 kilometres south of Malalane, and is linked to Swaziland by two provincial roads, and with Mozambique by the main national road (N4).

To cater for this growing demand for formal retail outlets, Moolman Group has started work to expand and more than double the retail space to 18 000m2 with a host of popular new tenants joining the new anchoring Shoprite and Roots Butchery stores. The expanded retail hub has been renamed as Matsamo Mall.

Prospective tenants have showed immense excitement and support for the project and include Ackermans, Mr Price, Jet, Pep Home, Total Sports, Markham and Shoprite Liquor. The tenant mix will be rounded off by new additions like Studio 88, Sneaker Factory, The Fix, Sportscene, Exact, Nizam, Edition Sports and Renegade Fashion Outlet.

The newly expanded and renamed Matsamo Mall is set to open in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The mall is set to enhance the current retail offering of the Vhembe District with more than 15 new stores and will bring convenience, value and a central retail hub to residents of the area and neighbouring countries.
