Prince Buthelezi Mall

A NEW BENCHMARK FOR EMPANGENI

Formerly known as Greenhills Mall, Prince Buthelezi Mall has officially opened its doors, marking a significant milestone for Empangeni and the greater northern KwaZulu-Natal region. Named in honour of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the centre stands as a tribute to his legacy of leadership and commitment to community upliftment.

Developed by the Moolman Group in partnership with Twin City and Melta Capital, the 37 000m² retail destination introduces a new, fully integrated shopping node to the area, bringing over 100 stores together in a modern, accessible environment . Strategically located near the R102 and N2, the mall addresses a long-standing need for high-quality retail closer to home, reducing reliance on surrounding towns.

The architectural design draws inspiration from the natural landscape, with forms and finishes reflecting the rolling green hills and surrounding sugarcane fields. Inside, the centre offers a vibrant and contemporary shopping experience, enhanced by natural light, curated public spaces, and thoughtful design elements that prioritise comfort, safety, and ease of movement.

A major focus of the development has been accessibility and long-term regional impact. Significant investment was made in surrounding infrastructure, including road upgrades and improved connectivity, as well as close collaboration with local taxi associations to ensure seamless commuter access. These improvements extend beyond the mall itself, strengthening the broader node and unlocking future growth potential.

Prince Buthelezi Mall offers a diverse and balanced tenant mix, combining leading national retailers with strong local representation. Fashion anchors include TFG, Pepkor, Mr Price Group and Truworths, while the food offering features well-known brands such as Spur, Panarottis, Nando’s, Burger King and McDonald’s. Key financial institutions including Capitec, FNB, Standard Bank, Absa and Old Mutual further enhance the centre’s everyday convenience.

Beyond retail, the centre has been designed as a place for community connection. Entertainment offerings such as Galaxy Bingo, dedicated social and dining spaces, family-friendly amenities, and the inclusion of local businesses all contribute to a destination that reflects the spirit and character of Empangeni.

Since opening, the mall has already begun to make a meaningful impact — creating over 1 200 jobs and introducing a new level of accessibility, convenience and choice for the surrounding communities . More than just a retail development, Prince Buthelezi Mall represents a long-term investment in the region, setting a new standard for integrated, community-focused retail environments.
